What you need to know
What are the commitment and attendance requirements?
To provide quality services and support to the hospital, we rely on the commitment of our volunteers. Our minimum commitment requirements are:
- Volunteers are expected to commit to a 3-4 hour weekly shift, on a consistent day and time and consecutive basis for a minimum of 75 hours. For example, your weekly shift might be Wednesdays from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. This often takes 5-6 months to complete.
- Due to our minimum time commitment, we do not have a summer volunteer program at this time.
What is the minimum age requirement to volunteer at QCH?
Volunteers must be 16 years or older to volunteer at the hospital.
Once I apply, how long will it take before I can start volunteering?
All applications will be kept on file for a period of six months. If during those six months, your interests, skills, experience, and availability match the anticipated volunteer opportunities, you will be contacted for an in-person interview. If the interview is successful and both parties decide to move forward, there are three mandatory onboarding steps before you can begin volunteering. These are: completion of a medical form including a 2-step TB test, completion of a police record check (dependent on age), and attending a general orientation.
If you have not been contacted within six months of submitting your application, you will need to submit your application again for consideration.
Are job shadow opportunities or co-op placements available?
QCH does not offer job shadow opportunities. For inquiries regarding high school co-op placements, please contact HR@qch.on.ca.
I travel frequently throughout the year. May I still apply?
Yes. Many volunteers travel during the year. Volunteers whose absence is less than 8 weeks are able to return to their regular assignment. If the absence is 8 weeks or longer the volunteer is not guaranteed to return to their regular assignment/shift. In these cases, we will find a suitable placement upon return.
