The Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) Clinic is located within the Endoscopy/Cystoscopy Department, on the Main Level of the Hospital (Level 2).


For patients needing intravenous (IV) treatments with certain medications or IV treatment that is expected continue over longer periods of time, the insertion of a PICC may be needed. The QCH PICC Team consists of specially trained nurse experts who provide PICC insertion and trouble-shooting care to QCH patients.

 

Referral and appointments: 

Referrals for PICC insertions must be made by QCH physicians. Referrals from non-QCH physicians will not be accepted.


The PICC nurses organize their daily schedule based on the medical urgency of the referrals they have received.

What to bring

  • Health card.
  • Updated medication and allergy list.
  • Any regularly used mobility aids.
  • Your care partner is welcome to attend with you.

How to prepare

Preparations and medications:

    • Please eat as you normally would, before coming to your appointment.
    • There is no need to fast for a PICC insertion

Arrival to hospital:

    • Please arrive 20 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
    • This provides enough time to register, get to the clinic, and complete the intake process.

What to expect

When you get to the Endoscopy/Cystoscopy Clinic (after registering at the Main Registration in the hospital's main entrance), the PICC nurse will be called by the clerk.

    • The PICC nurse will bring you from the waiting area to the PICC room.
    • The nurse will review the procedure with you, answer your questions, and have you sign the consent form for PICC insertions.
    • You will be given a local freezing to numb the site before the PICC insertion.
    • The nurse will be using an ultrasound to located and measure the best vein in the upper portion of your arm to use. They will clean the area around the insertion site and this area must stay clean, so please do not touch the coverings the nurse puts on you.
    • After the procedure, the nurse will talk to you about what to do next and give you the paperwork and any teaching you need.
