About the Medical Day Unit (MedDay):

The Medical Day Unit is a Specialized Nursing Unit where pre-booked patients are provided with a wide variety of medical and urological treatments.  These treatments include infusions (examples:  blood transfusions, IVIG & IV Iron infusions) and procedures (examples:  therapeutic phlebotomy, thoracentesis, paracentesis, bone marrow sampling, lumbar puncture, BCG bladder treatments, and interstitial cystitis bladder treatments). The Medical Day Unit is located at the back of the Ambulatory Care Department on Level 1 (the basement level). 

 

Referral and appointments:

Select QCH Hematologists, Gastroenterologists, Hepatologists, Urologists, Respirologists and Internal Medicine Physicians have access to book patients into the Medical Day Unit.  Outside referrals are not accepted.  

 

Medical Day Unit patients can expect a call from our Patient Scheduling Clerk with appointment details.  Patients who have a Connected Care Patient Portal account will also see their booked appointments in their Patient Portal.

 

Note:  If you are unable to attend your booked appointment, please call us to make the changes as soon as possible.  Appointment spots are limited and notifying us early of a need to reschedule will allow us to support another patient with a booking.

What to bring to your out-patient Medical Day Unit appointment:

-          Your Health Card / OHIP Card

-          An accurate list of all your current medications, including any vitamins, supplements, and allergies

-          Mobility aids:

      • The Medical Day Unit is located a fair walk from the Main Entrance and Registration.  We recommend bringing your regular mobility device(s).
      • If a wheelchair is required, they can be found at the Main Entrance

-          Please wear warm clothes and bring a clean blanket:  Infusion fluids are cooled or room temperature, and the clinic can be cool too – bringing your own blanket and dressing warmly can help make your stay more comfortable

-          If your Doctor prescribed a medication that you will be bringing to the Clinic for your treatment, you must ensure your pharmacy can release it to you for the date of your appointment.  If you are unable to obtain the medication and bring it in with you, you will need to rebook your Medical Day Unit appointment, and you can call us to make these changes.

-          Your care partner is welcome to attend with you.  They may be asked to sit off to the side while the Nurse initiates your treatment.

 

 

How to prepare:

 

·         Follow the direction of the Doctor overseeing your treatment regarding your medications.  For some procedures you may be told to temporarily hold specific medications

·         You may need someone to bring you home:  In most cases you can drive or use public transportation independently, however there are some procedures where someone else will need to drive you home (or accompany you).  At the time of your appointment booking, the Patient Scheduling Clerk will tell you if you need to arrange a drive for the date of your treatment.  

·         Appointment durations are dependent on your treatment:

o    Most Intravenous Infusions take 1.5 hours to 3 hours to complete; there can be circumstances where this could extend 

o    Other procedures are usually 30 to 60 minutes in duration 

    • If your Doctor provided you with financial consideration forms, these must be completed and submitted to the Queensway Carleton Hospital Finance Department for processing and approval.  In these situations, appointments will not be booked with an approval.  If you do not receive approval, your Doctor will be notified and they will contact you to discuss alternative treatment options  

 

Arrival to hospital: 

  • Please arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment and go to Patient Registration to be registered first (near the Main Entrance)
  • After Registration you will be sent to the Medical Day Unit, Ambulatory Care, Level 1

 

What to Expect during your clinic appt:

  • Once you arrive to Ambulatory Care, the main desk reception staff will direct you to Medical Day, and the Nurse/Clerk there will check you in.
  • The Nurse will settle you into a chair or stretcher for your treatment/procedure
  • Your care partner is welcome to attend with you.  They may be asked to sit off to the side while the Nurse initiates your treatment
  • Your Doctor will not be present for your appointment, unless they are performing the procedure (for example: Thoracentesis and Lumbar Punctures)
  • You will be provided with your next appointment information (if applicable) and any discharge instructions before you leave our care
